Activities from the lodge:
Labyrinth - Created through a forest, surrounded by awesome nature, peace and tranquillity with a dramatic view of the Drakensberg Mountains. Of course like everything at Antbear Lodge this Labyrinth is unique and does not follow the classical labyrinth anything. It has a spiritual and meditative character and is loved by retreat attendees. We also have Healing Days when groups come and first walk Labyrinth and can arrange to combine them a Yoga class or Reiki sessions, breathing exercises and relaxation. We often supply light vegetarian snacks, herbal teas, fruit juices and clear mountain water. Even picnic baskets. People just love this country spiritual outing.
Hiking - Antbear Lodge offers a few different hiking trail options on the property. Hike to the top of the hill on a 3 hour round trip where you can enjoy some spectacular views. Take a picnic lunch with you. A shorter 1 hour trail that visits the dams on the property makes for a lovely stroll in the afternoon.
Horse trails - Antbear Lodge offers horse trails right on their eco farm near to Giants Castle which are particularly suited to beginners. We practice the gentler horse whispering methods to train our horses and go for slow outrides on the farm. The rides here are safe and slow still lots of experienced riders have enjoyed what we offer.
Abseiling - Antbear Lodge has created an abseiling site that offers a safe and controlled environment to experience this soft adventure. Stepping backwards over the edge and descending down the cliff unleashing an adrenaline rush and boosting your self confidence.Ideal to combine with team building events or just a fun day out. Beginner abseiling is our specialty although advanced guests have just as much fun. No previous experience needed. You need to wear closed shoes. Abseiling is a fun family adventure activity.
African story telling in a star gazing hammock camp - Mlendeni Sitole will tell you his grandmothers folktales of the night skies. From the comfort of a star gazing hammock camp you relax and observe the heavens and listen to the night sounds. He makes you feel like you have never seen the night sky before, when you go stargazing at Antbear Lodge. The Milky Way arcs over you like a giant swathe of smoke – reminiscent of the African tale of its origins where a strong-willed girl who became so angry when her mother would not give her any of a delicious roasted root that she grabbed the roasting roots from the fire and threw the roots and ashes into the sky, where the red and white roots now glow as red and white stars, and the ashes are the Milky Way.
Hot air ballooning - Antbear Lodge offers a hot air balloon launch site right in from of the lodge. This is by far the best location to fly in the Drakensberg where you get right into the steep valleys and weather conditions are mostly perfect for hot air balloon flights. Its an early morning experience and take off is 10 minutes before sunrise so that you can watch the sun come up from the basket as you ascend. Flights generally are an hour and then you return to the lodge for a champagne breakfast.
Start of a slack packing trail - Explore the Drakensberg foothills without the burden of a backpack walking from lodge to lodge, having your luggage transported for you and looking forward to excellent 3 course meals. The Giants Castle Slack packing trail is a luxury hike offering comfortable and varied accommodation experiences each night, luggage transfers and delectable catering. The start of the Trail is at Antbear Lodge.
